La Mamma
We took a ride to New York City in October to see a bona fide revival of the show with its original text and music, see "The Tooth of Crime" October 3-22. The venerable Shepard piece is okay -- not that much to talk about afterwards. Attempts to sort it out yield little intellectually. I don't think he was that serious, just throwing language around like a madman. It's what they used to call in the 80's "the total affect" -- it makes a big impression without being that meaningful. The amazing thing about this show today is really just how much the culture has swept in to flood its wake with more of the same. What seemed extreme in the 80s now seems clichÈd; we see much flashier stuff in the same vein every single day now.

This production was interesting and very well done, but about a quarter or more of the audience left at intermission, because (let's face it) it's a bruiser. However for us it was a must see and well worth it. Very cool staging. Have never seen the city so mellow.
